I’ll be the first to admit I did not know what EFT tapping therapy was. I began to explore self-care, anxiety, and stress relief. I started by googling “tapping for anxiety relief” and found myself down a rabbit hole of EFT tapping therapy. What I discovered was so many amazing benefits and helpful information. Today I wanted to share some of the information I found with you.
What is EFT Tapping Therapy?
Emotional freedom technique (EFT) is a treatment for physical and emotional pain. Many people also call it tapping therapy. Many who use EFT tapping therapy believe that finding and tapping specific points on your body will help with emotional and physical pain. They believe it will also help balance the energy in your body.
EFT tapping therapy uses your fingertips to help energize your body and stimulate energy points. You tap specific places on your body where your “life energy” runs through your body. It is believed that an imbalance in your “life energy” can cause illnesses or disease.

How does EFT Tapping Therapy Work?
There are a few steps to EFT tapping therapy.
- Step 1: Figure out the problem.
Focus on the negative feelings like fear, anxiety, or a large problem or issue you are having. You need to focus on only one feeling or problem at a time. This will strengthen the result.
- Step 2: Self Assessment
You want to take a self assessment of the problem you are having. You will need to take this self assessment before beginning or you will be unable to really figure out if EFT tapping therapy is working for you. Use a 0-10 scale to decide on how intense your pain or problem is.
- Step 3: Set-Up Phrase
Before you get started with the actual act of tapping. You need to determine a phrase that explains what pain/problem you are trying to relieve. The common setup phrase is: “Even though I have this [fear or problem], I deeply and completely accept myself.” You can change this phrase to best fit your pain/problem. But, you can not make the phrase address someone else’s problem. For example, you can not say “Even though my sister is in pain, I deeply and completely accept myself.” If you want to focus on a problem with someone else. Make sure your phrase is “you” centered. Example “Even though I am very sad my sister is in pain, I deeply and completely accept myself.”
- Step 4: EFT Tapping Therapy Process
You will start by focusing on the nine meridian points on your body, tapping the end of each of the meridian points.
There are actually twelve meridian points on your body: the karate chop, top of head, side of the eye, under the eye, under the nose, eyebrow, chin, under the arm, beginning of the collarbone. Each point goes along with different parts of your body, such as your spleen, central vessel.
Say your set-up phrase three times and then you tap at your eyebrow, down to the side of your eye, under the eye, then under your nose, chin and beginning of the collarbone, and under the arm. Finally, you end at the top of your head. You will want to tap each point 7 times.
While working through each point, you want to speak a reminder phrase two or three times. If your set-up phrase was “Even though I am very sad my sister is in pain, I deeply and completely accept myself.” You will want to repeat “The sadness I feel because my sister is in pain.” Repeating the reminder phrase at each meridian point.
- Step 5: Self-Assessment (Again)
At the end of your sequence, complete another self-assessment. How is your pain after your EFT tapping therapy session? How are you feeling? If you are not at the magical number of 0. Repeat step 4 until you get to 0.
Let me give you the cliff note version of the steps above. Think of an issue, or pain you are having. Then tap specific energy points on your body (meridian points) which are thought to be tied to different parts of your body/different emotions. You may have to repeat this process until you do not feel that pain or feeling anymore.

How Does EFT Tapping Therapy Work On A Deeper Level?
Unblocking stored emotions
EFT tapping therapy works well for physical pain. However, it is known for helping on a much deeper level. We are always absorbing information and feelings and impressions from our environment, every day, and every second of that day. We even get information subconsciously about our bodies (temperature, sugar balance, etc.)
While you are tapping, you are consciously and subconsciously trying to receive healing. You are focusing on the emotions right at the beginning with the set-up phrase and throughout the entire process. While tapping, subconscious feelings will rise and you will become consciously aware of them. Since these feelings are now conscious feelings, you can work through those emotions and clear them from your body.
Unblocking Trauma
Many people have had dramatic events in their life or trauma and often because of those events, people are full of judgement and emotions. These can make it stressful and painful for people, and many cannot release them all.
Many people hold on to those feelings subconsciously and they develop poor coping habits like burying the feelings, avoiding them, or distracting themselves.
But, by using EFT tapping therapy, you can use the tapping of the meridian points to help every time an event or something triggered a memory of the trauma surfaces or.
Healing Long Term
As a beginner, the entire process of EFT tapping therapy may seem very overwhelming. You may think that you have so many emotions and points of trauma, there is no way to clear it all.
But, don’t give up because practice makes perfect and as you practice, you will develop an understanding of the core issues you have and this will lead you on the path to freedom and healing. All the minor events/feelings will resolve after you have resolved the core issues.
